Llanelli Wanderers v TumbleMatch Report 06/09/04 Having reached the dizzy heights of division 3 for the first time in their history, the Wanderers began their campaign with a 20 points to 7 victory over local rivals Tumble. The game was far from a classic with numerous handling errors on both sides and a general lack of continuity. What was impressive was the work of the home forwards who dominated most aspects of the forward exchange and a main feature of the game was their driving and re-cycling of the ball. Unfortunately, with a new trio in midfield, there was a lack of cohesion after some excellent work by the forwards. One such movement saw the Wanderers forwards drive and interpass from one 22 to the other and only a handling error prevented a well deserved try. The Wanderers opened their account after 5 minutes with a penalty from outside half Steffan Rogers, but the rest of the half was of forward pressure but nothing to show for it. Following a rare excursion to the Wanderers line, a dropped pass was pounced upon for Tumble`s opening try, which was also converted. An uninspiring first half closed with the Wanderers trailing by 7 points to 3. The Wanderers were beginning to rue their missed opportunities and when they were reduced to 14 men after a yellow card the omens were not looking good. However, it seemed to galvanise the Wanderers and following a period of pressure second row Gav Mathias powered over for the try. Luckily Steffan Rogers had just returned to the field of play and was successful with the conversion. 10 points to 7 The Wanderers were now beginning to look a little more convincing, and a superb chip over the defence by scrum half Andrew Jenkins, was collected by wing Gareth Spuffard, who pirouetted round the tacklers to cross in the corner. The conversion failed. 15 –7 A catalogue of dropped passes meant that Tumble were unable to exert any real pressure and with the Wanderers ending the game the stronger, turn over ball in the Tumble half resulted in the ball being moved out wide for Gareth Spuffard to cross for his second try of the game. FINAL SCORE: WANDERERS 20 TUMBLE 7 Tries: Gareth Spuffard (2), Gavin Mathias (1) Penalty: Steffan Rogers Conversion: Steffan Rogers.
