LAMPETER v LLANELLI WANDERERS 05/03/05This may just be the result that puts the Wanderers on the road to recovery and help maintain their division 3 status, as they returned from Lampeter with an impressive 14 points to 7 victory. It was scant reward for the corresponding home game, where they were denied 5 seemingly good tries in their defeat. The sleet and heavy rain which fell prior to kick off subsided but the game was played in bitterly cold conditions, with the Wanderers playing into a strong wind at the off. From the kick off, the Wanderers set their stall out by immediately running the ball back at their hosts. The backs and forwards combined well, with Lee Cook and Rob Jenkins prominent, to set up a ruck 5 meters out. When the ball emerged it was that man Andrew Jenkins who powered over for his all too familiar 2 meter try. Steffan Rogers was successful with the conversion and the Wanderers led 7 points to nil with only 2 minutes having been played. The Wanderers continued to have the upper hand for the opening quarter, due mainly to the play of the forwards and they were only denied their second score when wing Mark Cook was held up inches short of the line. It was, however, the backs who took full credit for the Wanderers next score. Taking the ball in his own 22, center Lee Cook burst through his opposite number and took play up to half way where he fed his co-center Karl Evans to take play on. His superbly timed pass allowed wing Mark Cook to round the full back and cross under the posts and with conversion, for a deserved 14 points to 0 scoreline. Lampeter hit back and a period of pressure was rewarded when they crossed following a catch and drive from the lineout. The Wanderers looked certain to increase their lead after Karl Evans made ground, only for his inside pass to be intercepted and set up a Lampeter attack. The half closed Wanderers 14, Lampeter 7 The opening quarter after the re-start saw Lampeter with the initiative but sound Wanderers defence kept the line intact. It was difficult to pick out individuals from a fine team performance, but flanker Andrew Davies was making some big tackles on the opposition. Once again, Dylan Hughes had stepped in at the 12 hour and gave another accomplished performance. After weathering the early pressure, Wanderers then reasserted control and spent most of the final 15 minutes in the Lampeter 22. As the final whistle blew they were pressing hard on the home try line and although no points were scored, it had been an entertaining second half, especially for the visiting supporters !! This will hopefully galvanise the team for their run in to the end of the season.
