LLANELLI WANDERERS v PENCLAWDD 12/03/05The euphoria of last weeks excellent result was quickly extinguished as the visitors ran in seven tries for a 50 points to 17 victory on Saturday. Due to this fixture having been rearranged, a number of players were unavailable and the Wanderers had the strange sight of a prop and a winger in the back row !! Penclawdd set their stall out from the start as they crossed for the opening score with barely 2 minutes on the clock. The score doubled to 14 points quite quickly as the visitors full back was proving unstoppable, scoring and converting both opening tries. Whilst the home forwards were attempting to put some passages of play together, they were penalized for the full back to once again step up with a penalty. However, against the run of play, the Wanderers managed to hit back when Karl Evans intercepted an attack in his own 22 and sprinted the length of the field to score under the posts. Adrian Davies converted to make the score 7 points to 17. The visitors were proving strong in both three-quarter and forward play, as their next 2 tries came from a fine forward drive which eventually released the centre to score and a catch and drive for a forward score. The Wanderers were beginning to put their game together and exert some pressure when the whistle blew for the end of the half, with Penclawdd good value for their 31 points to 7 lead. The second half proved much the same, with some woeful kicking and tackling by the home side preventing any real impetus. The visitors had increased their lead by 5 points before the Wanderers set up the next score. Karl Evans gathered a poor touch kick and ran it back at the visitors. He offloaded to co-center Leighton Williams who broke through the defence to set up a run in for wing Gareth Spuffard to cross. However, Penclawdd continued the onslaught with 2 further converted tries to bring up the half century of points. Wanderers could not be faltered for their efforts as they kept plugging away until a period of pressure finally saw hooker Andrew Jenkins emerge as the try scorer from a powerful forward drive. Although well beaten on the day, the Wanderers must be credited with not giving up and a plus point was the fact that center Leighton Williams is beginning to settle in and show what he is capable of. Wanderers make the return trip to Penclawdd on Friday evening hoping for better fortune. FINAL SCORE WANDERERS 17 PENCLAWDD 50 TRY: A. JENKINS, K. EVANS, G. SPUFFARD CONVERSION: ADRIAN DAVIES
