LLANELLI WANDERERS v TENBY 26/03/05The Wanderers began the run into the homeward straight on Saturday with a well deserved victory against their opponents from Pembrokeshire, scoring 2 tries in their 25-20 victory. The home team began the game with purpose, highlighted with a typical break from his own 22 by Karl Evans. Backs and forwards were combining well and it was a little against the run of play when Tenby took the lead with a penalty after 11 minutes. Tenby had little to counter the Wanderers driving mauls, apart from infringements, which resulted in outside half Vaughan Thomas slotting over 3 penalties. With Rob Mathias supplementing Iwan Jones`s lineout work, the Wanderers were able to launch a number of attacks from this set piece, and another rolling maul by the forwards enabled that man Andrew “ Kato” Jenkins to supply the finishing touch for the opening try, which was quickly followed by another Vaughan Thomas penalty. Darren Bowles was making a welcome return to the club and showing that he had lost none of his talent with a number of telling drives into the visitors defence. With Vaughan Thomas enjoying an armchair ride at outside half and making the visitors pay for their indiscretions, it was disappointing when a lapse just on half time allowed Tenby to claw back 7 points. The whistle brought the half to a close with the Wanderers leading by 17 points to 10. Tenby were first on the score-sheet in the second period with a snap drop goal, whilst Vaughan Thomas replied with another penalty. Wanderers wing, Mark Cook, then popped up between the centers following fine lineout ball, to sprint over from 22 meters for the Wanderers second try. Mark Cook and Karl Evans were certainly looking dangerous behind the rampant forwards, whilst the desire to win was epitomized by a bone crunching tackle from captain James Banister on the opposing captain. The whole ground shook !!! Gareth Spuffard was prevented from increasing the lead when, following some excellent back play, he was pulled back for a forward pass. Tenby managed a rare excursion into the Wanderers 22 and were rewarded with a well-worked try and conversion. The final 5 minutes of the game saw the Wanderers pound the visitors line but just unable to cross. The desire of the players was certainly prominent and augurs well for the run in to the end of the season where, hopefully, division 3 status will be maintained. FINAL SCORE WANDERERS 25 TENBY 20 TRY: (2) A. JENKINS (KATO), M. COOK PENALTY: (5) V. THOMAS (5) |
