TRIMSARAN v LLANELLI WANDERERS                                          02/04/05

Glorious spring sunshine greeted the Wanderers on their visit to local rivals Trimsaran on Saturday. However the welcome was far from friendly as Trimsaran took the spoils with a 22 points to 14.victory.

Once again, it was a case of two Wanderers sides turning up for the game.

The Wanderers were quickly on the attack and within 5 minutes had opened the scoring with a well worked try following a chip over the defence by outside half Johney Jones, which was gathered by full back Steffan Rogers on the burst, to round the opposing full back and cross under the posts. Johney Jones converted to put the Wanderers 7 points up after 5 minutes.

For the following 30 minutes the Wanderers were camped in the home 22 but a strong Timsaran defence, and wrong choice of options, meant the Wanderers were unable to increase their lead.  In fact, totally against the run of play, Trimsaran opened their account with their first venture into Wanderers territory when they took advantage of a mix up to cross for a converted try.

Within a minute of the restart, just as the half time whistle beckoned, the game was completely turned on its head when a mistake in their own 22 allowed Trimsaran to pick up a loose ball and cross once again.

From a half the Wanderers had totally dominated, they amazingly went into the break 14 points to 7 down.

Although now playing into a stiff breeze, which did not make life easy, it appeared that the Wanderers completely lost their way following the opening score of the half by Trimsaran. They did briefly threaten when Lee Cook, having moved back into the pack from centre, picked up from a ruck and charged through from 22 meters to score under the posts, duly converted by Vaughan Thomas.

With only 5 points between the sides, the Wanderers did raise their game until a mistake whilst attacking allowed Trimsaran to clear their lines and the impetus was lost for the rest of the game. It was Trimsaran who then camped in the Wanderers 22 for the final period, increasing their lead further with a penalty.

The disappointing aspect for the traveling fans was the fact that the Wanderers had been in total control for the first half, had failed to convert pressure into points and gave away two soft scores at the end of the half. Whilst the home defence had been difficult to break down and the Trimsaran pack had the upper hand in the tight, it was disturbing that the Wanderers were bereft of ideas when faced with these obstacles. Whilst the loss of coach Jonathan Mayze through injury just after half time left the Wanderers without the experience to counter Trimsaran`s strengths.
