LLANELLI WANDERERS v BAGLAN 25/09/04The Wanderers took a break from League action on Saturday to entertain Baglan from Division 5 South West in the Konica Minolta cup first round. It was not one of the Wanderers best performances but they managed to run out winners by 39 points to 14. Baglan began the game by kicking deep into the Wanderers half, where they remained for the opening 10 minutes until they were rewarded with a converted penalty. The Wanderers hit back but continuity was lost on a number of occasions by bad handling. The sin binning of flanker Stuart Jenkins for a high tackle did not help the cause, but the forwards were rewarded for a fine driving maul when Jonathan Hope emerged as the try scorer. Steffan Rogers was successful with the conversion. 7 –3 The Wanderers increased their lead when a fine catch and drive by Iwan Jones resulted in Rob Jenkins going over in the corner. The conversion failed. 12 – 3 Baglan did hit back with 2 further penalties and a disappointing half closed with the Wanderers leading by 12 points to 9. The Wanderers appeared more purposeful in the second half and once again a score resulted when following a line-out, captain James Bannister stole the ball from his opponent and powered over for a try. When the ball fell, as Steffan Rogers was due to take the kick, his quick thinking allowed him to drop goal the conversion from wide out. 19 –9 As the forwards become more dominant 2 further tries ensued for scrum half Andrew Jenkins. Who showed his usual tenacity from 5 meters to power over for his scores. Both conversions failed. The Wanderers rounded off the scoring with a try by Andrew Davies, and possibly saved the best till last when the ball was won up front and swiftly passed along the backs for Steffan Rogers to cross in the corner. Conversions once again being the Achilles heel, as only 2 conversions from 7 were successful. The Wanderers finished the game with 14 men due to injuries and Baglan, to their credit kept plugging away and were rewarded with a try by their no. 8 on full time. The main plus points from the game were the excellent relieving kicks from outside half Steffan Rogers and the dominance of Iwan Jones in the line-out exchanges. Stuart Jenkins, once again proved his versatility by putting in a polished performance at flanker. Wanderers fans were dismayed, however, to see center Jeff Adams leave the field with a recurrence of his groin problems. FINAL SCORE WANDERERS 39 BAGLAN 14 Tries; J. Hope, R. Jenkins, S. Rogers, J. Bannister, A. Davies, A. Jenkins (Kato) 2 Conversions; S. Rogers (2)
