 Llanelli Wanderers v Cardigan 16/04/05

The Wanderers entertained Cardigan on Saturday and, although crossing for 6 tries, produced a far from convincing performance in their 33 points to 19 victory.

The home side began well and opened their account after 5 minutes when skipper James Bannister powered over following a catch and drive at the lineout.

With 25 minutes on the clock the Wanderers appeared in total control as further tries followed for Leighton Williams, after some neat interpassing with the backs, Karl Evans, following a chip ahead and Iwan Jones who was in support to take an inside pass and canter over from 30 meters.

However, during the next 15 minutes, it appeared that the Wanderers had fallen into a deep sleep as the visitors replied with 3 tries in quick succession following some woeful tackling and the half time whistle blew to leave the Wanderers leading 20 points to 19.

Following the Cardigan revival it was important that the Wanderers got the first score, which they did for prop Lee Jones to cross after some good forward drives.

With the visitors looking dangerous in the three-quarters and prepared to counter attack at every opportunity, supporters were at a loss to see the home side constantly kick good possession away, and fail to bring wing Karl Evans more into play with his powerful bursts.

It was fortunate that the Wanderers forwards were able to secure turn-over ball on a number of occasions which halted the Cardigan momentum.

Following a series of powerful scrums, Wanderers crossed for their final try when no.8 Rob Jenkins picked up to power over.

The final action of the game saw Ian McAllister convert a penalty to conclude the scoring.

With Llandeilo picking up an unexpected win, the Wanderers find themselves needing 2 wins from their remaining 4 games to secure Division 3 status next year.
