LLANELLI WANDERERS v LOUGHOR 02/10/04

The Wanderers returned to League action following their cup exploits and entertained arch rivals Loughor. Unfortunately, the script for the game is becoming far too predictable.

Wanderers won the second half, if only they had turned up for the first  half !!  The Wanderers first half performance was indeed dire, with a failure to win and retain possession and a general lack of enthusiasm about their performance.

As a Wanderers supporter, there was not a lot to enthuse about during the first 40 minutes apart from a typical Andrew Jenkins try after the forwards had at last made some inroads into the Loughor defence.   The Loughor dominance was reflected in three tries, 2 penalties and a conversion, for the half to close with the visitors up 23 points to 5.

After a dressing down from the coaches, the Wanderers started the second half with a little more spirit and purpose. Unfortunately, their efforts were hampered by an early yellow card for prop Lee Jones.

The Wanderers were using Karl Evans, coming off his wing into mid field, to good effect and from such a move were able to re-cycle ball for newcomer Jeremy Phillips to cross unopposed. Steffan Rogers was successful with the conversion.          12 –23

The Wanderers performance had now upped a gear and had silenced the Loughor support and even when Gavin Mathias was sin binned, along with the Loghor prop, the Wanderers were able to maintain their impetus  but were unfortunate, on a number of occasions, not to cross the visitors line.

As it was, their first half performance had left them far too much to claw back, but a realization that it was a game they could have won.

Once again , Andrew Jenkins at scrum half, was a thorn in the opposition`s side and kept trying to rally his team mates to up their game. The high point of the half being a break  he made out of the Wanderers 22 , where the forwards took play on into Loughor territory, only for a cover tackle on the line preventing a score.
