GORSEINON v LLANELLI WANDERERS 09/10/04

The Wanderers travelled the short distance to Gorseinon on Saturday, but the welcome was far from neighbourly, and the power of the home pack set the grounding for a 44 points to 0 defeat.

The Wanderers chose to play into a stiff breeze and started promisingly, although soon trailing by 8 points. Their efforts were further hampered when wing Mark Cook, who had certainly looked to have the beating of his man, was forced to leave the field with a hamstring injury. The power of the home 8 certainly kept the Wanderers on the back foot, and they found themselves trailing by 20 points after the opening half hour, with scrum half Andrew Jenkins in the bin until half time.

The only Wanderers moves of note saw Andrew Davies and Lee Jones prominent in a forward drive and a fine break by Steffan Rogers in his role of scrum half.

The half closed with the Gorseinon pack rampant, and the Wanderers trailing by 27 points to 0.

The Wanderers tried gallantly to reverse their fortunes in the second half but were unable to overcome the strength of the home 8.  It is certainly a long time since the Wanderers pack had played second fiddle for such long periods of play.  The Wanderers, to their credit, kept plugging away at the home defence but some unfortunate turn overs at crucial times prevented any score for their efforts.

Once again, Karl Evans proved a potent force coming in from his wing, but Gorseinon added a further 3 tries to their 4 of the first half to run out winners by 44 points to 0.

Gorseinon have certainly been at the top half of the West Wales divisions for many years and that experience shone through on Saturday.  They have now set the marker to which the Wanderers will need to attain, but I`m sure that with the coaching staff and players currently available that aim is not impossible if minds are focused for the remainder of the season.

FINAL SCORE           GORSEINON             44        WANDERERS            0
