Llanelli Wanderers v Merthyr 30/10/04

The Wanderers took a break from League action on Saturday to entertain Merthyr, from Division 2 East in the Konica Minolta cup second round.

Unfortunately the Wanderers were down to the bare bones for the fixture, with only 15 players fit or available. This did not detract from a more than creditable performance by the home team, with every player giving 110 % effort, even though a number of players had to play out of their normal position.

The visitors proved a really powerful outfit, and played some excellent rugby in their 59 points to 3 victory.

Merthyr set their stall out immediately, and within 2 minutes had crossed for their opening try. The Wanderers, however, hit back and following a fine blind side break from scrum half Andrew Jenkins, set up play in the opponents 22. A fine catch in the lineout by Gavin Mathias, allowed the forwards to set up a driving maul, which resulted in a penalty, duly converted by Steffan Rogers.             3 – 7

Unfortunately, this was the only time that the Wanderers got within striking distance, as the rest of the half belonged to Merthyr and when the half time whistle blew, they were up by 38 points to 3, having scored 6 tries in the process.

The second half was much the same with Merthyr`s backs and forwards combining well and credit to the home side for restricting them to 3 further tries.

The game, played in the most part in excellent spirit, was only marred by the injury suffered by the visitors second row, 10 minutes from the end, which required hospital treatment for a suspected broken leg. He is wished a speedy recovery.

FINAL SCORE           WANDERERS            3          MERTHYR                  59

            Penalty:            Steffan Rogers.
