ABERYSTWYTH v LLANELLI WANDERERS 13/11/04

Saturday’s game is probably best described as game forgotten, but hopefully, lessons learnt, as the Wanderers were comprehensibly beaten by 74 points to 8, conceding 12 tries in the process.

It had all looked so different in the early exchanges as the Wanderers were quickly out of the blocks with a purposeful start and exerted early pressure on the home side.

Good re-cycling and driving by the forwards took play into the home 22 where that man Andrew Jenkins took possession from a maul and sprinted the 15 meters or so to the line, proving that he had pace to go with his undoubted power !!!

Further penalties were exchanged, which left the score at 3 – 8 to the visitors after the opening 10 minutes, with the Wanderers looking to have a platform in a very solid looking scrum.

Unfortunately, it was from this point on that things went horribly wrong, and after the home side crossed for 3 tries in quick succession the heart appeared to go out of the Wanderers side.

The pace and power of the home three-quarters, albeit assisted by their dual registered players from Llandovery, was too much for the visitors to handle and whilst the forwards competed well, Aberystwyth were able to score at will with the Wanderers unable to get their hands on the ball for long periods.

Failure to find touch when defending meant that the Wanderers were constantly under pressure as the home side used their three-quarter pace to full advantage. The only high point of the second half was a period of play where Andrew Barah`s surge for the line was held up inches short.

FINAL SCORE           ABERYSTWYTH       74        WANDERERS            8

TRY: Andrew Jenkins (Kato)

PENALTY: Steffan Rogers

With the current dip in form and confidence, the next game against Cardigan takes on huge proportions, with the outcome for the season possibly hanging on it.
