This report is provided by the Llangefni reporter as the Wanderers Reporter has "retired" 28/10/2006 - Llanelli Wanderers 32 Llangefni 10 As happened at last weekends’ cup game, Cefni started this game strongly, pressing deep into Wanderers territory, and seemed to exert their authority early on, but eventually lost 32-10 to the West Wales league leaders. The first twenty minutes were basically an exchange of territory and possession as both sides strove to break defences. After ten minutes Cefni had strayed offside at centre, Daniel Rodgers kicked the penalty. 3-0. Cefni continued to contest in all aspects of play, Dylan Thomas and Iestyn Dafydd both prominent in the lineouts. A number of Cefni moves were thwarted, by refereeing decisions that both puzzled and exasperated the team and travelling supporters. Despite this a number of attacks by centre Rhodri Gray, flankers Dafydd Myrddin and Emlyn Bown kept play flowing back towards the home defence. Penalties awarded to Cefni were not really taken advantage of and chances to take the lead came and went. Towards the half time mark Cefni’s lineout near the Wanderers’ line seemed to be a good scoring opportunity but crucially lost the ball, as the home side swept upfield they were awarded a penalty, from the following lineout they mauled the ball towards Cefni’s line allowing hooker Dan Nicholson to go over for an unconverted try 8 - 0. HT. Cefni must have felt that the second half would allow them to claw their way back into the game but some loose tackling and indecisive ball clearing was to prove costly. After some desperate defending the play stormed downfield, Cefni seemed to break the defence but crucially mishandled, a consolation penalty for offside was kicked by Emyr Hughes 8 - 3. From the restart Cefni carelessly allowed the ball to bounce into touch, following the lineout Llanelli's’ centre broke through some weak tackling to score near the posts. Converted 15 - 3. Some more missed tackles and defensive fumbling allowed Wanderers to gain territory cheaply, but from the lineout Cefni surprised the home side stealing the ball, allowing Dafydd Myrddyn to storm downfield supported by Will Bown. Play broke down short of the line but the ball was regained allowing centre Dylan Jones to pass to wing Ioan Davies who wrong footed the defence to score left of the posts, converted by Emyr Hughes. Having work hard to get back into the game, Cefni's fight back was short lived as yet another controversial penalty to the hosts took the score to 18 -10. Following this, another attack by Wanderers saw Daniel Rodgers dummy his way through the heart of the defence to score under the posts, converted 25 -10. As the game progressed a short penalty move by Cefni broke down and the clearance kick was picked up by Daniel Rodgers yet again to score and convert 32-10. The game drew to a close as Cefni continued to try and gain continuity and flow in their game, unfortunately as throughout the game they struggled to maintain pressure and find the telling break through of the home defence. The final score was 32 -10. As the Autumn Internationals start next week Cefni's’ next game is at home on November 18th against Laugharne. Squad: Tries I. L. Davies |
