There is of course a long way to go, but the top three or four in Division 3 West could be excused for glancing nervously over their shoulders after rampant Newcastle Emlyn caused the biggest upset of the season in outclassing leaders Llanelli Wanderers, and emerging 42-3 winners. In completing a win hat-trick the Red and Whites moved into a handy position to launch a challenge during the second half of the campaign. And on present form it would take a brave man to wager against them doing just that. The Teifisiders made the best possible start when the forwards won early ball, and after the ball passed through several pairs of hands lock Llyr Evans was up in support to take a try-scoring pass. Outside half Huw Evans added the extras. Inspirational Evans kicked brilliantly from hand, notched 17 points with the boot and crossed for a try. Visiting fly half Nick Evans replied with a penalty, but then his namesake in the Emlyn side notched a try, converted the touchdown and landed two penalties to put daylight between the sides. It got even better for the home fans when impressive fullback Mark Lloyd went in for a try converted by Evans. Early in the second period Emlyn were awarded a penalty try and centre Aled Davies broke from inside his own 22 before transferring to winger Iestyn Crompton who ran in for a try. Evans converted both scores. The Red and Whites could move closer to the summit this Saturday by banking maximum points from the visit of lowly Laugharne. 12:23pm Monday 11th December 2006 |
