Llanelli Wanderers v Ammanford 02/09/06The Wanderers opened the season’s campaign with a home game against recently promoted Ammanford and did just enough to carry off a 34 points to 18 victory. The match really failed to ignite as both sides tried to find their feet in this opening encounter. Ammanford opened the scoring with a penalty after 2 minutes but the rest of the half belonged to the home side as interplay between the backs provided 2 opening tries for Daniel Rogers and Mark Cook, with Steffan Rogers from full back running some excellent angles in attack. Andrew “Kato” Jenkins rounded off the half with his trademark try, powering over from 5 metres to give the Wanderers a 19 points to 3 half time lead. Ammanford again began the half with the opening score of a penalty, but the Wanderers three-quarters then took control with some fine interpassing to enable the gaps to appear for wings Karl Evans and Mark Cook to record tries. However, with expectations that the Wanderers would up a gear, the reverse occurred when a home attack broke down and Ammanford counter attacked for their pacey wing to run in from half way. Within minutes, the wing again gathered a chip ahead to speed in under the posts. Home spectators were beginning to get a bit restless until No. 8 , Jonathan Mayze, opened up the Ammanford defence following a pick up from the scrum and fed flanker Rhys Harries who outpaced the defence to run in from 22 metres out. A far from convincing performance from the home side, but bearing in mind the first outing of the season, things should only improve and the key being a victory in the opening encounter. Special mention should be made of the Wanderers back row of Rhys Harries, Jonathan Mayze and David Evans who worked tirelessly all afternoon. FINAL SCOREWANDERERS 34 AMMANFORD 18 TRY: Mark Cook (2), Daniel Rogers, Karl Evans, Rhys Harries, Andrew “Kato” Jenkins CONVERSION: Daniel Rogers (2) |
