Llanelli Wanderers v Pembroke Dock Quins 20/01/07

Following 3 defeats on the trot away from home, the Wanderers finally got back to some resemblance of their early season form with a home victory by 28 points to 18.  The torrential rain of previous weeks gave way to a windy, but gloriously sunny day.

Two infringements from the kick off and resulting scrum gave the Quins the opportunity to open the scoring with a penalty after 30 seconds.  The Wanderers did however hit back within minutes when centre Karl Evans powered through to score out wide. Another powerful burst from the centre resulted in a penalty, converted by Steffan Rogers.

Although the Wanderers were enjoying most of the territory, a speculative kick from the visitors was not gathered, enabling them to cross for their opening try under the posts.  Ten minutes later, further pressure, instigated from the running of Karl Evans, resulted in a penalty, again converted by Steffan Rogers.

The Wanderers were however denied the half time lead when a rare sortie into their half gave the visitors a penalty and enabled them to lead by 13 points to 11 at the interval.

The opening 20 minutes of he second half were nip and tuck, with the Wanderers standing up well to their far bigger opponents. Following an excellent passage of play and a try from wing Mark Cook, when he stood up his opposite number and waltzed passed him to cross wide out, the turning point of the game came following a period of pressure by the visitors which left their outstanding no.8 seemingly in at the corner.

However, Wanderers man of the match Karl Evans had other ideas as he came from nowhere to bundle him into touch on the corner flag. Although the Quins again regained the lead 10 minutes later with a try following another kick poorly handled, many felt this try saving tackle had given the home side the impetus they required to take control of the game.

With backs and forwards now combining well and setting up phase upon phase of play, excellent tries followed for both Andrew Jenkins`s in the final 10 minutes, leaving the Wanderers worthy winners on the day and hopefully back in the promotion chase.
