Llanelli Wanderers v Cardigan - Saturday 6th October 2008Cardis are awesome9:55am Monday 8th September 2008 Rugby Round-Up By John Adey Awesome! That aptly summed up Cardigan as last season’s Division 3 West runners-up started the new campaign in tremendous fashion with a 54-7 away win against Llanelli Wanderers. And in the same division Newcastle Emlyn also hit the ground running in springing a 49-6 win over Tumble at Ddol Wyber. The Cardis gave a clear indication of their intention to figure prominently in the title race again and if they can repeat this performance on a regular basis it could prove imprudent to bet against them going one better this time around. Brimming with confidence from the first whistle forwards and backs combined brilliantly, and even under severe provocation from their opponents, who had three players sin-binned and one sent off, the visitors kept their composure in playing attractive 15-man rugby. New blindside flanker Gonzalo Lucena, who has played for a top club in Portugal, gave a good account of himself on his debut while Phillip Leighton, who started on the wing and moved to outside half after Iestyn Crompton picked up an injury, gave his ample skills a thorough airing. Another to make an impression was centre and youth team skipper Jack Lynch and skipper Colin ‘Trigger’ Davies at No. 8 continued in the kind of outstanding form he showed last term. For the visitors, who led 34-7 at the break, skipper Davies crossed for two tries and also on the scoresheet were outside half Crompton, young centre Lynch, scrum-half Michael Diggle, openside flanker Marcus Heighton and replacement fullback Arwyn Wilson. Colin Davies added five conversions and three penalties. This is the report which appeared in the Cardigan and Tivyside Advertiser - The local paper for Cardigan area. |
