CARDIGAN RFC v LLANELLI WANDERERS RFC

 Saturday 17th October 2009

Three tries away from home and a dominant set piece, yet the Wanderers returned from Cardigan with nothing to show for their efforts and performance, losing by 28 points to 20.

The Home side opened the scoring with an early penalty but the Wanderers responded within minutes with a try out wide from No. 8 Ashley Banfield, after the Wanderers had taken a scrum against the head and gone through a number of phases.

The Wanderers continued to dominate the scrums, winning numerous against the head, but went behind when some weak tackling allowed the Cardigan centre to run through and score.

Within 10 minutes the Wanderers hit back. Again following some powerful scrumaging, wing Adam Thomas popped up in the centre to cross unopposed. Iwan Mayze converted to give the Wanderers a lead of 12 points to 8.

With the Wanderers in the ascendancy, there then followed 5 minutes of unbelievable rugby as the Wanderers conceded a yellow card and on 2 consecutive occasions, with penalties in their own 22, failed to find touch and allowed Cardigan to run back at them and from looking comfortable, went into the half time break trailing by 22 points to 12.

An early penalty by Cardigan was cancelled out when Iwan Jones was awarded a try following a catch and drive by the forwards. With 10 minutes remaining, the Wanderers narrowed the gap to 5 points when Jeremy Phillips converted a penalty, only for Cardigan in turn to be awarded a penalty which put them 8 points clear. Not detered the Wanderers continued to press and seemed certain to narrow the gap following a series of penalties in the Cardigan 22 until a quickly taken penalty, instead of waiting for the dominant scrum, came to nothing and allowed Cardigan to relieve he pressure.

The game ended with Cardigan winners by 28 points to 20, and the Wanderers yet again losing a game they should have won and more importantly, not even getting a bonus point their efforts deserved
