Ammanford RFC v Llanelli Wanderers RFCSWALEC PLATESaturday 31st October 2009 The Wanderers were given an insight into Division 2 rugby on Saturday when they met Ammanford in the Swalec plate competition, going down by 50 points to 14. Although resting some injured players, the Wanderers were no match for a very good home side and were soon made to realise they would need to up their game to compete at this higher level. During the first quarter, the Wanderers found it difficult to get their hands on the ball and thanks to some poor kicking and non-existent tackling at times were soon trailing by 19 points. With 2 tries coming from run-ins from the half way line, the half closed with the Wanderers tailing by 31 points to 0 and looking a very dispirited side. However, the Wanderers made a far more positive start to the second half and stunned their hosts in the opening minutes when, after some good approach work, Jamie Charlton crossed under the posts for a try, converted by Iwan Mayze. Within minutes, the home team were again rocked when centre Karl Evans was able to run through from half way with the hosts appealing for a knock on which was not seen by the referee. Iwan Mayze was again successful with the conversion. Any complacency on the part of the hosts now disappeared as they once again upped their game to put the Wanderers under increasing pressure. Three tries followed, one of which was a penalty try after the wing was impeded in a kick and chase for the line. The Wanderers could not prevent the half century coming up but “ a game of 2 halves” was justified as the Wanderers failed to get to terms with their opponents in the first half, but made a better showing in the second. Final Score Ammanford 50 Wanderers 14 |
