WANDERERS v ABERGAVENNY 29/11/03
Saturday saw a
break from league action with the visit of Abergavenny, from division 3 East ,
for the WRU Challenge Cup match.
The game turned into a typical cup
match , whilst the Wanderers were unable to reproduce the flowing rugby of
earlier weeks due to the fact that they were forced into making 10 changes for
this game., the spirit and commitment of the team could not be questioned.
In fact the game was 35 minutes old
before the first , and only score of the half, fell to the Wanderers, who moved
the ball along the three-quarter line for Karl Evans to cross wide out.
The second half was of a similar
pattern to the first and perhaps the Wanderers were lucky that the visitors back
line seemed incapable of stringing their passes together. Having said that, they
were up against a very resolute Wanderers defence in which outside half, Richard
Clement, was outstanding.
It was Clem, himself, who set up the
Wanderers second try when he powered round his opposite number and had Dylan
Hughes on hand to take the pass and crash over near the posts. Rich Clem was
successful with the conversion.
There was a period of Abergavenny
pressure, but they just could not penetrate the Wanderers defence.
This was an outstanding team
performance of which all can feel proud, none more so than Dylan Hughes and Dean
Evans, making their first starts for the first fifteen for some time.
It was also pleasing to see the
return of Iwan Jones, who has been out for quite some time following an injury.
This result has certainly given the
coaches a major selection headache over the coming weeks.
