Match ReportLlanelli Wanderers v Whitland 27/12/20034th Round of the Konica Minolta KO Cup Competition After victories over Aberdare and Abergavenny in the previous rounds the Wanderers travelled west to play first division Whitland in the 4th round of the cup on Saturday. The final score of 64 points to 5 did not do justice to the committed and brave performance from the Wanderers squad. Second row Dorian Lee was given the honour of leading the Wanderers to mark his 24 years unbroken service to the club. Any thoughts of the Wanderers creating a shock result were blown out of the window within the first 10 minutes as Whitland ran in two tries. The first was scored by full-back Gavin Morris, and the second by outside half Eifion Roberts who had recently returned from Australia. Roberts converted both tries to give his side a 14-0 lead. Prop Romeo Callella added a further try on 25 minutes when he drove over from a rolling maul and it was soon 24-0 when flanker Johnny Koloi went over for a try. From then on it was a case of damage limitation for the Wanderers, and they did manage to reduce the deficit before half time when winger Gareth Spuffard finished off the best break of the game, following a quick tapped penalty from the quick thinking scrum-half Andrew Jenkins. The Wanderers continued to battle bravely against the odds, but found the pace and skill of the Whitland threequarters too hot to handle. Wing Andrew Richards proved the most troublesome and left the defence flat footed with a hat-trick of tries late on. The first try of the second half was scored by Johnny Koloi who sprinted 50 yards for his second try. Centre Lee Glanville, who was celebrating his birthday, added a further try as did replacement flanker Stuart Tyne. The one abiding incident from the match was the tackle by Wanderers prop Lee Jones, playing his first game of the season, on his opposite number. The whole ground shook with the impact !!!! The Wanderers players all did the club proud, and they can now concentrate on the job of securing a third successive promotion, starting with the journey to Loughor on Saturday. Final score: Whitland 64 Llanelli Wanderers 5 Try: G Spuffard |
