LLANELLI
WANDERERS v LAUGHARNE
10/01/04 The Wanderers poor run of results
continued with their third consecutive defeat at the hands of Laugharne on
Saturday. The Laugharne back division, boosted
by a number of players from the Whitland squad, were too hot for the Wanderers
to handle, whilst a number of positional changes in the Wanderers back division
compounded the disjointed nature of their play with the ball constantly being
spilled in good attacking positions. The Wanderers were out of the blocks
quickly, putting their opponents under pressure immediately. However, failure to
win their own lineout ball in crucial areas prevented any score until they were
awarded a penalty, which Stuart Prendaville converted. Laugharne replied a few
minutes later with a penalty from the touchline. The story of the first 30 minutes was
Wanderers pressure but failure to take their chances due to constant mistakes. The final 10 minutes of the half saw
the Laugharne back division playing some excellent running rugby in the wet
conditions and they were finally rewarded with a well worked try with another
superb conversion from the touchline. The half finished with he Wanderers
defending their line and trailing by 3 points to 10. Wanderers got off to the worst
possible start to the second half when, direct from the kick off, Laugharne
broke through to score under the posts. The try was converted. This signaled an
opening 10 minutes of continuous Laugharne pressure but the Wanderers defence
held firm to prevent any further scores. Due to the power of their scrummage,
the Wanderers were finally able to exert some pressure and when scrum half
Andrew Jenkins was stopped inches short of the line, Lee Cook was on hand to
pick up and crash over to bring the scores to 8 -17. Soon after, Rob Mathias made a fine
40-meter break away from a lineout and was stopped just yards short of the try
line. There now followed a period of Wanderers pressure and they were finally
awarded a penalty, which Andrew Jenkins took quickly to power over in the
corner. The conversion again failed. However, the Wanderers were unable to
add to the score as they were unable to get near to the Laugharne try line and
were pinned in their own 22 for most of the final 10 minutes as they tried to
run the ball but failed in the wet
conditions. It had been a disappointing day for
the Wanderers and not the best of starts to the second round of fixtures. All
will need to raise morale and performance for the difficult month ahead if
promotion is to be secured. FINAL SCORE: LLANELLI WANDERERS 13
LAUGHARNE 17 Wanderers – TRIES: L.
