MATCH REPORT The Wanderers failed to reproduce the
form of the previous week, and went down by 20 points to 5 against promotion
rivals the Quins on Saturday. The Wanderers put their opponents under
early pressure but some poor kicking in attack allowed the Quins to overturn
ball and counter attack. From 1 such incident, the Wanderers were
forced to scrummage near their line, which resulted in the big Quins pack being
able to push the Wanderers back to concede the 7 point score. Following another
counter attack, some excellent interpassing between backs and forwards saw the
Quins make ground and score wide out. The Wanderers found that, for the first
time this season, they were unable to dominate the set pieces and were
constantly on the back foot in this area. The half closed with the Wanderers
trailing by 12 points to 0 with a series of missed opportunities to score. With
the main highlighted of the half being a fine break in midfield by Karl Evans
from which the Wanderers again failed to capitalize. The Wanderers conceded a soft try early
in the second half when the Quins center was able to run in unopposed from half
way. The Wanderers finally broke out from their half following a fine run by
Oliver Day, but again mistakes caused a turnover and a resulting penalty for the
Quins. The Wanderers were finally rewarded for
their efforts, following a good period of possession, when the ball was spread
out wide for wing Dylan Hughes to cross. The Quins continued to press but the
Wanderers defense held firm. There was no question that the Quins
were the better side on the day but some poor refereeing had not helped the
Wanderers cause. It had been another disappointing day
for the Wanderers where a win would have given them some breathing space in the
promotion chase. Compounded with Loughor losing, there now remains possibly 5
teams in contention for the promotion places. Having played most of the top
teams, the Wanderers dare not slip up against teams from the lower half of the
table and hope that the other contenders take points off each other. FINAL SCORE: PEMBROKE DOCK QUINS
