MATCH REPORT BURY
PORT v LLANELLI WANDERERS 7/02/04 The Wanderers made the short trip to
local rivals Burry Port on Saturday and came away with a 31 points to 5 win.
Victory was instigated from the performance of the forwards and complimented
with some excellent three quarter play. Wanderers kicked off with a strong wind
in their favour
and quickly got into their stride, and when a maul was set up near the Burry
Port line, Iwan Jones was on hand to crash over. Shaun Thomas was successful
with the conversion. Shortly afterwards, Bury Port were
trying to move the ball along the three quarters on half way, when wing Dylan
Hughes intercepted a pass and ran in unopposed to score under the posts. Shaun
was again successful with the conversion. Burry Port did hit back when their
outside half was allowed to run in from 22 meters to score what was to be their
only points of the afternoon. The Wanderers were now beginning to
control matters up front and when the ball was moved along the backs, Gareth
Spuffard was able to find space and cross in the corner. Another excellent
move just on half time saw Lee Cook take a pass on half way and burst through
between the Wanderers centres to score a well executed try out wide. The half closed with the Wanderers
dominant and leading 24 points to 5. The second half saw the Wanderers
playing into the wind but they were able to put a stranglehold on the game
through the performance of the forwards. And with centers Stuart Prendaville and
Shaun Thomas giving a new found confidence to the back division, the Wanderers
were able to set up some excellent play from their own try line on a number of
occasions. An almost carbon copy of Lee Cook`s try,
saw wing Karl Evans burst through the middle to score under the posts. Shaun was
successful with the conversion. It is difficult to pick out individuals
from the performance, but the return of Iwan Jones to dominate the lineout and
the control which Shaun Thomas has brought to the side cannot be overestimated.
How does Dorian Lee continue to put in the performances he does! With 6 games remaining it`s all to play
for in the promotion stakes. That`s all the Wanderers can do is continue to put
in performances such as todays'. FINAL SCORE; BURRY PORT 5 WANDERERS 31 Wanderers – TRIES:
I. JONES, D. HUGHES, G. SPUFFARD, L. COOK, K. EVANS.
CONVERSIONS:
S. THOMAS (3)
