MATCH
REPORT
TYCROES
v LLANELLI WANDERERS 13/09/03 The Wanderers finally got
their season underway at Tycroes on Saturday. The first half proved to be
a fairly dour affair with Tycroes unable to convert pressure into points. The Wanderers found it difficult to
break out of their 25 due to facing the breeze, a number of handling errors,
possibly due to a few new faces in the back division, and some very strange
refereeing decisions. The main threat for the Wanderers came
when scrum half, Andrew Jenkins, just failed to make the try line after a break
from half way. Tycroes then took the lead after 25 minutes with a penalty. With the Wanderers trying to run the
ball at every opportunity, they were rewarded on the half hour when center
Stuart Prendaville rounded off a fine handling movement to score under the
posts. The conversion failed. 2 minutes later Tycroes replied with a
penalty and the half finished 6-5 to Tycroes. The second half started with early
Wanderers pressure, which was rewarded when hooker Gareth Rees crossed for the
Wanderers second try. Again the conversion failed. 6-10 to the Wanderers. The Wanderers were now managing to put
passages of play together with the highlight being the passing out of the tackle
and the support play. A try for Andrew Jenkins followed after
20 minutes (6-15) and the Wanderers were unlucky not to score following a fine
midfield break by captain Stefan Rogers when wing Gareth Spuffard was stopped
just short of the line. The rustiness was now beginning to
disappear from the Wanderers play and the new signings were beginning to impose
themselves in the game. Following a 5-meter lineout, a typical
catch and drive resulted in a further try for scrum half Andrew Jenkins. 6-20. With Rob Mathias and Andrew Davies
winning some good lineout ball and Lee Cooke constantly winning ball on the
Tycroes put in, the Wanderers were beginning to dominate, although some poor
refereeing left both sets of supporters dismayed at the lack of continuity. Following some Tycroes pressure, a kick down field followed by a lineout saw Gavin Mathias cross for the Wanderers fifth try, which was converted by Christian Jones. 6-27. An off the ball injury to hooker Gareth
Rees saw the “ youthful” Keith Harris take the field for the final ten
minutes. His first duty was to win a ball against the head and set up position
for the Wanderers to complete the scoring with a try for Johnny Jones, converted
by Christian Jones. FINAL SCORE: TYCROES 6 LANELLI WANDERERS 34. Wanderers
– 6 tries – A. Jenkins (2),
G.Mathias, G.Rees, S.Prendaville, J.Jones.
2 conversions – C.Jones. |
