MATCH REPORT
LLANELLI
WANDERERS v BETWS 21/02/04 See match pics Saturday’s rearranged game against Betws was played in
brilliant sunshine, which belayed the bitterly cold and windy conditions. The Wanderers, playing into the wind, started brightly
with Jeff Adams in particular constantly probing the Betws
defence. It was from a Jeff Adams break that position was set up in
the Betws half. Following a fine handling move by the three quarters, Lee Cook
came storming into the line to set up position 10 meters out.
From the resulting line out, a fine front peel saw the evergreen Dorian Lee power over in the corner for the
opening try. The conversion failed. Shortly afterwards, the three quarters moved the ball for
wing Karl Evans to split the Betws defence and outside half Johney Jones was on
hand to cross-unopposed under the posts. Shaun Thomas converted.
12 – 0 A series of errors then allowed Betws back into the game.
A speculative kick bounced kindly for their opening try, with the conversion
added from wide out. When the Wanderers backs were penalized for crossing, it
allowed a further 3 points for the visitors. The Wanderers were soon back on the offensive and when
Johney Jones attempted to chip over the advancing defense he was taken out late
for Shaun Thomas to convert the penalty. As the half came to a close, Andrew Jenkins, at scrum
half, breached the gain line for Johney Jones and Stuart Prendaville to take the
ball on and for Jeff Adams to finally cross wide out.
Half time score 20 – 10 The second half saw the Wanderers playing with the wind at
their backs but for some reason they were reluctant to clear their try line by
kicking down field and instead tried to run the ball, unsuccessfully, from their
own line. This meant they were stuck in their own 22 for long periods. This was highlighted once they got into the Betws half, a
fine half break by Johney Jones, with flanker Lee Cook once again on hand to
power forward, set up Stuart Prendaville for him to run in unopposed under the
posts. Conversion by Shaun. Further tries followed for Jeff Adams, a solo effort from
his own half, and Iwan Jones, after some fine forward drives. Perhaps the defining moment of the game was to see Dorian
Lee once again peel from the front of the line to cross-unopposed, only to have
the try disallowed for a colleagues (London) indiscretion. It would certainly
have capped another fine performance from the lock forward who was prominent
with some storming forward charges. This was another fine performance by the forwards,
supplemented with some excellent back play and it was only due to them not
clearing their line by kicking and a number of dropped passes at crucial times
which prevented a far higher score. It is now getting very tight for the promotion places but
that`s all the Wanderers can do is continue to put in performances such as
todays. FINAL SCORE: WANDERERS 37 BETWS 10 Wanderers – TRIES: J. ADAMS (2), D.LEE, J. JONES, S. PRENDAVILLE
CONVERSIONS: S.
THOMAS (2)
