MATCH REPORT

BYNEA v LLANELLI WANDERERS 13/03/04

See match pics

Saturday saw the Wanderers travel to local rivals Bynea and return with a hard fought 32 points to 3 victory.  The Wanderers were fortunate that  veteran Barrie Davies was able to stand in and gave his usual polished performance against one of his old clubs. Rumour has it that his aim is to play on longer than Dorian Lee.

Wanderers kicked off into the swirling wind and had the perfect start when they were awarded a penalty after 2 minutes, converted by Barrie Davies.  Wanderers continued to enjoy the territorial advantage but the next score was a Bynea penalty to level the scores.

The Wanderers appeared reluctant to spin the ball out wide but on the occasion that they did an initial break by Stuart Prendaville, saw the ball fed out to Gareth Spuffard to cross out wide. The conversion failed.

The Wanderers scrum was once again dominant and but for some strange refereeing decisions, would have converted this superiority into far more points, As it was a series of drives by the forwards opened up the Bynea defence for scrum half Andrew Jenkins to canter over from 22 meters. The conversion failed again as the whistle blew for half time.

Following some Bynea pressure, the Wanderers finally relieved the situation with a kick into the opposing 22. From here the ball was fed across the line for Karl Evans to again cross out wide. The conversion failed.

Further Bynea pressure ensued, but following a crunching tackle by Andrew Davies on the opposing outside half, the Wanderers set up a sweeping move almost the length of the field but over elaboration prevented a score. Wanderers kept up the pressure which finally saw Karl Evans cross for his second try following some excellent forward drives. Barrie was successful with the conversion.

Karl continued to be a thorn in the Bynea side and a superb break by him only failed to produce a try when Stuart Prendaville dropped the scoring pass!!

The Wanderers forward dominance was finally rewarded when, from a series of drives which opened up the Bynea defence, Gavin Mathias crossed for his try near the posts. Converted by Barrie Davies.

Bynea refused to throw in the towel and to their credit kept plugging away until the final whistle.
