MATCH REPORT

LLANELLI WANDERERS v MILFORD HAVEN  03/04/04

The Wanderers now enter the final month of the season with all to play for. Whilst their fate may be decided by other teams, they must ensure that they win their remaining games to stay in the promotion race.

The first leg of that quest saw them comfortably defeat their visitors by 32 points to 10 on Saturday.

With a number of three-quarters unavailable, there was understandably a slightly disjointed look with the back play. It was however pleasing to see the return of Stuart Jenkins after a long lay off with injury.

As in their previous game, the Wanderers opened the scoring in the first 5 minutes with a penalty from Barrie Davies. Milford replied 10 minutes later with a long range penalty.

With Karl Evans and Andrew Jenkins at scrum half, constantly probing for openings the next score came from a lineout, where Rob Mathias fed Gavin Mathias for him to power over in the corner from a front peel.

The back 3 of Christian Jones, Oli Day and Gareth Spuffard were counter attacking effectively and when position was set up in the Milford half, some excellent three-quarter passing saw Lee Cook open up the defence to cross wide out.

The Wanderers were attempting to keep the ball alive in the tackle and the lineout  was being dominated by Rob Mathias and Iwan Jones. The half closed with the Wanderers 13 – 3 up.

The Wanderers were quickly into their stride in the second half and, following a quickly taken penalty, hooker Andrew Jenkins was able to cross near the posts for Barrie Davies to add the conversion.

Milford then enjoyed a period of pressure but a turn over ball enabled the Wanderers to set up an excellent attack with backs and forwards combining to send Lee Cook over for his second try. Barrie Davies converted.

Another try followed for Karl Evans but Milford, to their credit, kept plugging away and were rewarded with a try by their outside half. The whistle blew for full time as the conversion was successful.
