MATCH REPORT
LLANELLI
WANDERERS v TYCROES 10/04/04
The Wanderers entertained lowly
Tycroes on Saturday and ran out comfortable winners by 62 points to 3, obtaining
a crucial 10 tries in the process. The Wanderers set their intent out
early and, following a fine touchline break by scrum half Andrew Jenkins, the
ball was re-cycled and spread along the back division for Gareth Spuffard
to cross in the corner. Another incisive break by center
Stuart Prendaville resulted in scrum half Andrew Jenkins scoring his
customary try from the ensuing 5-meter ruck. Lee Cook was proving a handful for
the Tycroes defence with his constant charges from set and broken play. The evergreen Barrie Davies provided
the next spark with a superb break from half way, belying his ( 48 ??) years.
Karl Evans was on hand to keep the move going and when he was stopped just short
of the line, the forwards drove as one for Johney Hope to claim the try.
Barrie was successful with the conversion. Another fine three quarter move, with Lee Cook again providing the thrust, saw Barrie Davies break the gain line and feed Gareth Spuffard to cross for his second try of the game. Converted from the touchline by Barrie. Tycroes did eventually put some play together and were rewarded for their efforts with a penalty in front of the posts. The Wanderers hit back immediately
with Stuart Prendaville breaking through to score under the posts. Barrie
was again successful with the conversion. The half ended with the Wanderers up by 31 points to 3. The Wanderers continued their
dominance at the start of the second half and when a clearance kick was charged
down, both centers combined for Shaun Thomas to canter in from 22 meters
to score. Tycroes, to their credit, did put the
Wanderers under pressure and only a try saving tackle from Karl Evans prevented
a score for the visitors. The Wanderers again hit back with some excellent back
play and the ever supporting Lee Cook was on hand to take an inside pass
from Gareth Spuffard to cross wide out. Barrie converted. Another flowing movement where backs
and forwards combined set up position near the try line where scrum half Andrew
Jenkins was again unstoppable to crash over for his second try, which he
converted via a drop goal ! The Wanderers were now playing some
excellent rugby to which Tycroes had no answer. Another three quarter move was
exploited with a superb angle of running from Karl Evans to power through
and score from half way. Scrum half Andrew Jenkins again converted via a drop
goal. Shortly afterwards, Karl again took a pass on half way and powered through a bewildered Tycroes defence to score his second try. Another flowing move which produced
perhaps the best try of the game was disallowed for a foot in touch by Lee Cook,
which would have rounded off a superb match for the flanker who is improving
with every game he plays. Although the only back not on the
score sheet, it was also pleasing to see Oliver Day have a good game at full
back and for the backs, who have been over shadowed for much of the season by
the rampant pack of forwards, produce some excellent tries, orchestrated it must
be said by the evergreen Barrie Davies, who must be playing as well as he ever
did. FINAL SCORE: WANDERERS 62 TYCROES 3 Wanderers – TRIES: G.SPUFFARD (2), K. EVANS (2),
J. HOPE, L. COOK, CONVERSIONS: B. DAVIES (4), A. JENKINS (No. 9) (2)
