MATCH REPORT

LLANELLI WANDERERS v NEYLAND 17/04/04

The Wanderers played their penultimate game of the season against Neyland on Saturday and emerged winners by 44 points to 6. Some scintillating rugby at times saw them score 8 tries against the visitors.

The opening quarter saw Wanderers with the territory and endeavor but nothing to really show for their dominance until the forwards went on a rumble and re cycled the ball for Shaun Thomas to straighten the line and put Oliver Day in for the opening score.

The Wanderers continued to dominate but the half was a tale of wasted opportunities until a fine 50 meter break by Oliver Day set up position close to the Neyland line. The ensuing penalty was taken quickly for scrum half Andrew Jenkins to score his obligatory 5-meter try. Barrie Davies was successful with the conversion as the half closed with the Wanderers leading by 12 points to 0.

Neyland opened their account in the second half when they were awarded a penalty on half way, which their outside half successfully put over.

A further period of pressure saw the outside half double the Neyland score with a drop goal.

This galvanized the Wanderers into action with some excellent back play, resulting in center Shaun Thomas breaking through some weak tackling to cross under the posts. Converted by Barrie.

Now realizing that the game was theirs, the importance of the try count became paramount and following a sustained period of forward pressure, James Bannister emerged as the try scorer from a forward drive to the line.

Neyland did threaten briefly, but a superb tackle by Karl Evans in the corner prevented the Wanderers line being broken.

Another fine handling movement saw Shaun Thomas cross for his second try.

With the Wanderers mid field trio now orchestrating events and Lee Cook and Dorian Lee getting through some excellent support work, it was no surprise when the Wanderers disrupted a Neyland scrum and moved the ball out wide for Gareth Spuffard to cross.

With 15 minutes of the match remaining the supporters welcomed the sight of coach Johney Mayze joining the fray and it was good to see that he had not lost his appetite for the game, in fact he was up in support to power over for the Wanderers seventh try

The Wanderers completed their scoring as time was called when Barrie Davies crossed for a try following another disrupted scrum on the Neyland put in.
