MATCH REPORTLLANELLI WANDERERS v LOUGHOR 20/09/03Saturday saw the eagerly awaited clash against Loughor. Unfortunately, it was not one of their better performances and the Wanderers succeeded in presenting the win to their opponents. The Wanderers went on the attack from the opening whistle and were rewarded for their efforts with a penalty almost immediately. Unfortunately, the kick by Gareth Rees hit the upright and bounced away. This was the story for most of the opening 20 minutes. Wanderers attacking, missing their penalties and Loughor able to relieve the pressure with big kicks out of defence. One passage of play saw some excellent handling with the Wanderers back division putting wing Mark Tucker away. His inside pass merely had to be held by captain Stefan Rogers with the try line beckoning, only for the pass to be dropped!! Loughor were now beginning to get into the game without really threatening the try line. However, ill discipline at a scrum and then a ruck enabled Loughor to show how penalties should be converted. A disappointing first half closed with Loughor ahead 6-0. The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, scrappy with no real pattern of play from either side. Wanderers did manage to get their opening score following a 10 meter scrum, when interpassing between Rob Mathias and scrum half Andrew Jenkins saw the latter power over for the try, converted by Gareth Rees, 7-6 to the Wanderers. The pattern of the first half continued, with the Wanderers gaining position only to lose the ball for varying reasons. Loughor were again successful with 2 penalties due to Wanderers infringements, 7 –12. The Wanderers were forced to make 3 changes in the pack midway through the half and following some sustained pressure scrum half Andrew Jenkins was again successful with a try ,converted by Steffan Rogers 14 –12. However, the loss of line out jumper Rob Mathias was to prove costly as the Wanderers, failing to find their jumpers on their put in lost a number of crucial positions. The Wanderers fate was sealed when, 5 minutes from time, they were again penalised at a ruck to gift Loughor with a penalty to make the final score 14 –15. Two tries to nil counted for nothing. The only highlight of the game was the tussle between the Loughor no.8 (their best player by far) and the Wanderers scrum half Andrew Jenkins who possibly had one of his best games for the club. The Wanderers pack had the upper hand in the scrums, with Rob Jenkins working tirelessly throughout. Credit should also be given to the referee for his handling of the game. FINAL SCORE: WANDERERS 14 LOUGHOR 15 Tries; A. Jenkins (2), Conversions; G.Rees, S. Rogers |
