MATCH REPORT
LLANELLI WANDERERS v FISHGUARD 11/10/03 Saturday saw the Wanderers entertain Fishguard and many supporters had anticipated a stern test, but in the end the Wanderers ran our worthy winners. Wanderers were once again slow out of the blocks and following some entertaining back play by the visitors, were soon 3 points down. A further 2 penalties were exchanged with Fishguard moving the ball at every opportunity but without any real penetration, whilst Rhys Harries prevented an almost certain try with a tackle just short of the line on the only occasion they did threaten. The Wanderers were gradually getting back into the game, with their scrum proving the key area. Following some fine work again by Rhys Harries, the ball was moved along the backs for Gareth Spuffard to cross wide out. The conversion failed, 8 6. Almost immediately, the Wanderers were back on the attack and following a strike against the head by Gareth London, Lee Coke went on a barnstorming run of 40 meters to score wide out. Christian Jones was successful with the conversion, 15 6. The Wanderers 15 man game was now coming into its own, with the barnstorming runs of the forwards setting up some good positions. Late in the half, Fishguard would be kicking themselves for a dropped pass with an open try line and another try saving tackle, this time from Andrew Davies. As the half closed, play on both sides became very scrappy, not helped by the constant whistling of the referee for what appeared minor infringements. HALF TIME WANDERERS 15 FISHGUARD 6 Fishguard immediately put the Wanderers under pressure at the start of the half and from a well-worked lineout move, set up position for their outside half to cross for a try. 15-11 Further Fishguard pressure ensued, but against the run of play, good work by Rhys Harries on the ground enabled Lee Cook to go on another barnstorming 40-meter run, to cross under the posts. Christian was again successful with the conversion, 22 11. The pace of the game was now being upped but handling errors on both sides prevented any real threat. However, a Wanderers infringement enabled Fishguard to convert a penalty, and a further exchange of penalties brought the score to 25 17. With Fishguard sensing that they could perhaps get back into the game, the Wanderers now upped a gear with some fine interpassing between back and forwards. An excellent break by Stuart Jenkins, who was having a fine game in the centre, saw a movement stopped inches short of the try line. Following the winning of a Fishguard lineout by Johney Hope, the ball was moved amongst the backs for Johney Jones to supply the inside pass for Karl Evans to score an excellent try. The conversion from the touchline was successful by Christian, 32 17. The player coach now felt the time was right for his intrusion into the game, a welcome sight after almost 2 seasons out through injury. Perhaps we can allow him the tackles he missed. ! Following a break out of the Wanderers 22, we then witnessed what was probably one of the best tries scored on the ground by Karl Evans disallowed, and a scrum given to Fishguard 10 meters from their line. !!!!!!! However, the Wanderers had their tails up and following disruption of the scrum, the ball was won and moved out wide for Gareth Spuffard to collect his second try of the day. The game finished with the Wanderers in the ascendancy and starting to look like the team which had achieved promotion 2 seasons running. With players to return and hopefully the second XV up and running, the future is beginning to look quite bright. FINAL SCORE:
WANDERERS 37 FISHGUARD 17 Tries:
Gareth Spuffard (2), L. Cook (2), K. Evans Conversions:
Christian Jones (3) Penalties:
Christian Jones (2)
