MATCH REPORT

LLANELLI WANDERERS v ABERDARE            25/10/03

Saturday saw the Wanderers take a break from League action and entertain Aberdare from Division 4 South East in the Principality Cup.

How wrong the predictions of the previous nights Evening Post turned out to be with the Wanderers running in for 7 tries in their win.

The Wanderers made their customary slow start to the game and found themselves 7 points down after 10 minutes with the opposition looking a more than useful side.

However, with Karl Evans picking up a dropped pass whilst the visitors were attacking, he sprinted a full 30 meters to score unopposed under the posts. Stuart Prendaville was successful with the conversion.            7 – 7

Aberdare replied with a penalty (7- 10) but trying to run the ball at every opportunity again proved their downfall when Rhys Harries broke away to run in for a try from 30 meters. The conversion failed and Aberdare replied with a further penalty.

The half finished with the Wanderers trailing 12 – 13 and looking all to do.

Aberdare again opened the half with a penalty, but the next 20 minutes saw a remarkable turn round by the Wanderers who proceeded to blow the opposition away with some excellent counter attacks. Two runs from some 40 meters by Rhys Harries, saw him score his second try and set up another for outside half Johney Jones. Both were converted by Stuart Prendaville leaving the score 26 – 16 to the Wanderers.

With the Wanderers back row of Rob Jenkins, Dai Evans and Rhys Harries outstanding in attack in defence, Aberdare could not believe their luck when Lee Cook replaced Rhys Harries and proceeded to sprint 40 meters for his first try 31 – 16.

Following a fine break by center Stuart Prendaville, full back Oliver Day was on hand to keep the move going and cross for another Wanderers try. 36 - 16

Aberdare were not to be outdone and struck back almost immediately with a converted try 36 – 23. Johney Jones then replied with a drop goal after some fine attacking play to leave the Wanderers 39 – 23.

Aberdare were going through some excellent phases of play but could not break down a resolute Wanderers defence  where all 15 on the park played their part.

The icing on the cake with the last attacking move of the game saw Lee Cook again sprint some 40 meters clear to score under the posts. Conversion by Stu Prends.

The crowd had certainly been entertained by both sides and , with injured players now returning, the Wanderers are certainly setting their stall out for the rest of the season.
