MATCH REPORT
BETWS
v LLANELLI WANDERERS 01/11/03 It appears there is no stopping the Wanderers try machine at the moment. The Wanderers got off to the perfect start, when from the kickoff they set up position near the Betws line for prop, Johney Hope to power over for the first try. Conversion by Stuart Prendaville. 0 – 7. Betws struck back, and after a period of sustained pressure, brought the scores level until a kick over the Betws defence by outside half Johney Jones, set up a 5 metre scrum, from which the ball was moved along the back division for winger Karl Evans to cross out wide. The conversion failed. 7 – 12. The half was proving to be a scrappy affair, with the Wanderers failing to get any continuity in their play, with most of the game played between the 10 metre lines. With Betws failing with a number of penalty kicks, the Wanderers were fortunate to end the half 7 – 12 up. It took captain Karl Evans to spark the Wanderers into life following a fine break out of defence, he was on hand to finish off a move between backs and forwards, to cross for his second try. Stuart Prendaville was again successful with the conversion. 7 – 19 As in the previous weeks game, the Wanderers now upped a gear, with scrum half Andrew Jenkins dictating the pattern of play. Following a fine break by center Stuart Prendaville, Johney Jones was on hand to keep the move going and feed Rob Jenkins for his try. Stuart Prendaville was again successful with the conversion. 7 – 26. The try was just reward for Rob Jenkins who had been prominent in attack and defence throughout. With 15 minutes to go, Rob Mathias made a welcome return to the action after being out injured for a few weeks. He was immediately involved in setting up the attack for Johney Jones to chip ahead and gather to score under the posts. Stuart Prends was again successful with the conversion. 7 – 33 With backs and forwards now combining well, Johney Jones was able to collect his second try after slicing through the Betws defence. 7 – 38 To their credit, Betws continued to move the ball, but with winger Wayne Comley their only real threat. They were, however, rewarded with a converted try in the dying moments . 14 – 38 But not to be outdone, the Wanderers immediately struck back with the, by now, customary 40 metre sprint to the line for Rhys Harries. Johney Jones converted. FINAL SCORE:
