MATCH REPORT

LLANELLI WANDERERS v BURRY PORT  08/11/03

The Wanderers entertained local rivals Burry Port on Saturday and although running out winners by 38 points to 20, the performance was far from convincing and a big improvement will be needed for the next game against promotion rivals Llandybie

The Wanderers started off with a bang, scoring 26 points in the opening 20 minutes, to silence the vociferous Bury Port support.  Following a quickly taken penalty, Johney Jones crossed under the posts with the conversion by Christian Jones.

A period of sustained forward pressure then saw prop Johney Hope crash over, with another conversion from wide out by Christian.  The third try was created following a fine jinking run by full back Oliver Day, who had Rob Jenkins in support to score.  The conversion failed.

Following further good work by the forwards, Gavin Mathias drove over following catch and drive from a lineout. Christian converted from the touchline.

An amazing transformation then took place, with the Wanderers appearing to take their feet off the gas to allow Burry Port to come back with 2 tries from their three quarters.

The half ended with Burry Port in the ascendancy, but with the Wanderers in the lead 26 – 10.

Wanderers were back on song for the start of the second half when following a fine break by flanker Rhys Harries, supported by Gareth Spuffard who in turn was able to set up the play for Andrew Jenkins to crash over. The conversion again failed.

Burry Port were not to be outdone, and following more fine back play, their winger was able to run in for his second try.

Following an excellent try saving tackle from Gavin Mathias, who was perhaps the pick of the forwards, and after a fine break out of defence by Christian, taken on by Dorian Lee, Rhys Harries went on one of his now familiar 40 meter runs to cross under the posts, Christian converted.

There then followed a further period of Burry Port pressure, rewarded with an excellent third try for their left wing.  Luckily for the Wanderers, all kicks at goal by Burry Port failed or the outcome of the game might have been closer.

Deep in injury time the Wanderers gave a demonstration of the power of their scrum by pushing the Burry Port eight back some 10 meters.

It shows the expectations of the side in so much that people are critical of an eighteen-point win. However, it is the players themselves who have set the standard they are judged upon.

FINAL SCORE:      WANDERERS 38       BURRY PORT   20

Tries:                    J.Jones, J.Hope, R, Jenkins, G.Mathias, A.Jenkins, R.Harries,

Conversions:       C.Jones ( 4)
