MATCH REPORT

LLANDYBIE v LLANELLI WANDERERS 15/11/03

The Wanderers certainly hit new heights on Saturday with their performance against promotion rivals Llandybie. Their opponents were completely outplayed in a 43 points to nil drubbing.

The Wanderers opened the scoring after 10 minutes when , after winning a Llandybie lineout, the ball was taken on by Rhys Harries and Andrew Jenkins before Lee Cook made a dash for the line. He was held up inches short but prop forward James Bannister was on hand to take the final pass and score near the posts. Christian Jones was successful with the conversion.

The Wanderers were proving dominant in the scrums, despite the presence of ex Ponty and Bridgend forward Aled Griffiths in the home pack.

A number of spilt passes, along with constantly being pulled up for infringements, hindered  further Wanderers scores.   Perhaps the most bizarre episode being the sin binning of assistant coach Barrie Davies, who was forced to play in the center due to a number of injuries.

Llandybie did manage to exert some pressure during the half, but the Wanderers defence held firm, with center Karl Evans proving a constant threat in attack.

After his enforced rest, Barrie Davies showed he had lost none of his skills when he split the Llandybie defence and gave the scoring pass for Oliver Day to cross wide out. The conversion failed and the half closed with the Wanderers forwards beginning to take control.   H.T.  0 – 12

Following a fine move in the three quarters, Lee Cook took a pass in the center of the field to power through and score under the posts. Christian succeeded with the conversion.

A long kick out of defence was then collected by full back Oliver Day who proceeded to run back at Llandybie. Following some good interpassing, Johney Jones was able to stroll over for the Wanderers fourth try, converted by Christian.

With Rob Mathias and Andrew Davies winning good lineout ball and the Wanderers forwards now controlling most aspects of the game, scrum half Andrew Jenkins was able to dictate the play and made some powerful breaks to set up attacking positions.

Llandybie were forced to try and run any ball they had, but this resulted in their downfall when a mix up near their own line saw the ball come back of a post for Rhys Harries to collect and score. Christian again converted.

The Wanderers were now rampant, and following a maul in the Landybie 22, Lee Cook broke away to score his second try, this time the conversion failed.

Perhaps the best move of the game saw backs and forwards interpassing the length of the field, only for the move to be halted near the Llandybie line. Unfortunately, a melee ensued which saw yellow cards for 4 players, 2 from each side.

This did not diminish the control the Wanderers now had over the game, and following another fine run by Oliver Day in the dying moments of the game, Christian Jones was on hand to cross for the Wanderers final try. The conversion failed.

This was a polished and professional performance by the 19 players and the coaching staff and highlights the talent and commitment now evident throughout the club.
