Llanelli Wanderers v Lampeter Town 07/01/06

The Wanderers began the New Year, and the second round of fixtures, with a victory against old rivals Lampeter by 15 points to 10.

The gloom which gripped the camp when prop and coach James Bannister left for Narberth prior to Xmas was lifted with his return to the club and with Rob Mathias also making himself available, the team was in upbeat mood.

The Wanderers started at a cracking pace and were soon exerting pressure on their visitors.

In fact the opening 20 minutes saw the home team camped in the Lampeter 22 but unable to convert pressure into points. The Wanderers were made to pay for this failure when, with their first venture over the half way line saw a well worked try for the Lampeter  no 8., which was also converted.

This spurred on the home team and they finally got on the score sheet following an excellent break by Dan Rogers and taken on by Mark Cook and Karl Evans for Mike Rees to cross.  Sean Thomas converted to level the scores. Mike Rees crossed for a further score but to everyone`s surprise the referee felt he had hit the corner flag before grounding the ball.

The half closed with the Wanderers in control but the scores level at 7 -7.

With the Wanderers forwards matching their bigger opponents in most aspects, they were able to combine with the three-quarters to produce an excellent try for Dan Rogers to cross unopposed.

With James Bannister and Gavin Mathias making inroads with their ball carrying and some excellent three-quarter play, it was again disappointing that the Wanderers could not increase their lead. In fact it was Lampeter who began to look more likely to score a try but settled for a drop goal to bring them up to 12 points to 10.

Wanderers were unlucky when Mark Cook was ankle tapped when he appeared to have broken the cover and Mike Rees was tackled on the corner flag.

Penalty reversal for infringements also meant that the Wanderers were put on the back foot in good attacking positions.

It was left to Sean Thomas, with a penalty, to complete the scoring in a game which had promised so much early on but once again the Wanderers fell away in the second half. A trend which will hopefully be reversed in games to come.
