Llanelli Wanderers v Tumble 21/01/06

Whilst it has been the Wanderers three-quarters who have been taking most of the plaudits this season, it was an excellent forward platform which paved the way for the double over near neighbours Tumble on Saturday

The opening 20 minutes saw sustained Wanderers pressure, but determined defence kept them at bay until a series of forward drives created the opening for scrum half Andrew Jenkins to power over. Shaun Thomas was successful with the conversion.

To the amazement of the home supporters, it had been all possession and territory but on the 3 occasions Tumble had crossed the half way line, they had returned with 3 points from penalties each time. The half closed with Tumble 9 points, Wanderers 7.

The second half commenced with the Wanderers continuing to squander chances and Tumble increased their lead with a drop goal.

The Wanderers did eventually tie the score when James Bannister made excellent ground to appear in midfield to take the pass and power through the defensive cover to crash over.

Tumble replied almost immediately with another penalty and with the Tumble outside half constantly pegging the home team back the Wanderers were forced to dig deep.

There then followed a 10 minute period which transformed the game.

Following a catch and drive, the Wanderers were rewarded with a penalty try when the visitors pulled down the maul to prevent a score. Shaun converted and the visitors were reduced to 14 men.

This was a signal for the Wanderers to kick into gear and produce some scintillating play with backs and forwards combining to score 2 tries out of the top draw.

Man of the match, James Bannister crossed for his second (the swallow dive to score worth the admission price on its own !!!), Andrew Jenkins also picking up his second try after more enterprising play from the forwards.

Tumble, to their credit never gave up and were rewarded in the dying moments when a sweeping three quarter move enabled their winger to cross out wide.

Although the Wanderers forward effort was immense , the failure to convert 3 golden opportunities  for tries by the three quarters will surely be addressed with the return of coach Daniel Rogers for next weeks tough visit to Laugharne.
