Laugharne v Llanelli Wanderers 28/01/06

On probably the coldest day of the year to date, the Wanderers were defeated by the forward power of the home side. Although limited, the Laugharne catch and drive game proved effective for a 32 points to 15 victory.

Once again the Wanderers enjoyed early pressure but were unable to put points on the board and were soon struggling to come to terms with the forward drives of the home 8.

As the half drew to a close, the Wanderers had conceded 3 relatively soft tries and were trailing by 15 points when they had a stroke of good fortune. When a home attack broke down on half way, Mark Cook was able to pick up and show a clean pair of heels to the try line. The try was converted by Shaun Thomas.

With the half ending and the score of 15 points to 7, Wanderers had given themselves a life-line.

The second half began fairly evenly until centre Leighton Williams produced a try out of nothing.

Receiving the ball on the 22 metre line, he proceeded to take 3 would be tacklers with him and power over for a remarkable score.

The Laugharne side were now not so assured in their play, being pegged back by some fine attacking play by the visitors. The Wanderers were rewarded for their efforts when Laugharne were forced to concede a penalty, converted by Mike Rees, to level the scores.

Unfortunately, Laugharne were able to make progress into the Wanderers 22 and once again their catch and drive from the line-out could not be stopped as they regained the lead.

Unfortunately, there then followed a number of injuries on both sides, which disrupted the visitors more than the home side, and during the 10 minutes of injury time played, Laugharne proved the stronger running in 2 tries for a victory which although deserved, somewhat flattered them.
