Llanelli Wanderers v Pembroke Dock Quins 11/02/06A scintillating display from the Wanderers three quarters was overshadowed by an act of thuggery by a Pembroke Dock forward, whose assault on a Wanderers forward left the Wanderers player needing hospital treatment. An entertaining game, and a Wanderers victory by 29 points to 17, was marred by the incident some 10 minutes from time. The game had started brightly and the first Wanderers attack after 2 minutes resulted in Mike Rees showing his pace to break the defence. When stopped, he found Mark Cook on his inside for a scoring pass. The Wanderers failed to maintain this early pressure and both sides exchanged penalties for an 8 – 3 scoreline going into the last quarter of the first half. The bigger visitors pack now began to put the Wanderers under immense pressure, and although the home side defended resolutely, the visitors were finally awarded a penalty try and the half closed with the visitors leading by 10 points to 8. The visitors continued to pressure the Wanderers through their forwards and following similar pressure to their opening effort were again awarded a penalty try. However, the Wanderers backs continued to threaten every time they had the ball, with Daniel Rogers orchestrating their play. From one of his off loads, Mark Cook showed his pace to round his opposite number in the narrowest of gaps, and sprint down the touchline from half way to score. Mike Rees converted to bring the Wanderers back to within 2 points. Karl Evans had been carrying the ball well and committing a number of tacklers every time he received the ball. He was therefore rewarded following a half break and fine offload by outside half Johnny Jones enabled him to cross. Mike Rees added the conversion to give the Wanderers the lead. With 15 minutes remaining, a powerful break by Karl Evans with a deft offload, enabled Dan Rogers to cross over unopposed near the posts. Mike Rees converted to increase the Wanderers lead. With 10 minutes remaining the Wanderers again found themselves desperately defending their line against the strong Quins scrummage. But after being penalised on 2 occasions, fortunes were reversed when the Quins were subsequently penalised and the pressure relieved. The Quins took exception to this and after the subsequent relieving kick and lineout, decided to take the law into their own hands. The culprit was red carded and the final moments were played out in the Quins 22. FINAL SCOREWANDERERS 29 PEMBROKE DOCK 17 TRY: Mark Cook (2), Karl Evans, Dan Rogers CONVERSION: Mike Rees (3) PENALTY: Mike Rees |
