Trimsaran v Llanelli Wanderers 25/03/06

Saturday saw fourth placed Wanderers make the short trip to play local rivals, and second placed Trimsaran. The game was played in a torrential downpour which continued for the whole match.

The howling wind also ensured that it was going to be a game of two halves.

With the wind advantage in the first half it was important that the Wanderers got off to a good start, which they did when centre Daniel Rogers brushed past his opposite number to register the opening score after 8 minutes. Amazingly the conversion, almost in front of the posts was missed.

Although conditions were atrocious, the Wanderers continued in their expansive game and kept Trimsaran under pressure for most of the half.  A suburb take by Mark Cook from a pass by scrum half Andrew Jenkins, saw him round his man and power over for a try.

A penalty from Shaun Thomas was added to see the Wanderers good value for the 13 points to 0 lead at half time, with Daniel Rogers, Karl Evans and Mark Cook again looking dangerous.

The second half was a complete contrast with the Wanderers penned in their own half for almost all the 40 minutes. The Wanderers luck was completely out as long racking kicks from the Trimsaran outside half were stopping inches short of the dead ball line forcing drop out 25 instead of scrums back on half way.

On 3 occasions Trimsaran had set pieces within 10 metres of the Wanderers try line and on each occasion were able to exert their forward power into tries.

As the referee was about to end the game, the Wanderers made a last ditch effort to steal the game when Daniel Rogers broke out of the 22 and linked with Mark Cook on half way. The speedster was about to power away from the cover when a last ditch effort grabbed his shirt to halt him.

Both sides should be applauded for their efforts and the spirit in which the game was played considering the atrocious conditions.
