Llanelli Wanderers v Hendy 01/04/06The Wanderers defeated local rivals Hendy on Saturday by 52 points to 20 and, although crossing for 10 tries in the victory, were forced to go all the way by a spirited Hendy team. Supporters would not have guessed which team was in which half of the table in the early stages as Hendy scorned 2 chances for tries within the opening 5 minutes. However, the Wanderers first venture into opposing territory resulted in a try for winger Christian Jones out wide, after a fine break from Shaun Thomas and linking from Daniel Rogers. Hendy hit back with some fine forward drives, and were unlucky to only have a penalty to show for the pressure. When Daniel Rogers chipped over the visitors defence, it was only Steffan Rogers who responded by chasing the kick to touch down. Shortly afterwards, Karl Evans came in off his wing to take a pass in mid field and cruise over under the posts. Shaun Thomas achieved the only successful conversion of the day. The Wanderers were now exerting pressure on the visitors, but unfortunately when another try looked imminent, the Hendy full back intercepted a pass on his 22 and sprinted the length of the field to score under the posts to bring the score to 17 points to 10. The Wanderers then responded with tries from Jonathan Hope, who powered over following a series of forward drives, and Steffan Rogers, who was on hand to pick up after Leighton Williams was held up just short. Steffan Rogers completed his hat trick just on half time after charging a kick down and winning the race to the line The half closed with Wanderers leading by 32 points to 10. Hendy, to their credit, were not prepared to lie down and once again their forwards set up a try and conversion from out on the touchline. They narrowed the gap even further with a penalty from just inside the Wanderers half. The Wanderers replied with the basic scrum ball moved along the backs for centre Dan Rogers to put Steffan into the gap for him to cross for his fourth try. With Hendy tiring, the Wanderers backs and forwards were combining well with James Bannister once again giving a powerful display, closely followed by Lee Cook. From such a surge by James Bannister, Daniel Rogers was able to exploit a gap and following a good angle of running, was able to put Christian Jones in for his second try. Karl Evans followed this up with another typical burst for him from half way and some poor tackling allowed him to cross. Shaun Thomas rounded off the scoring with his first try of the season and brought the curtain down on a solid performance where every player had played their part. FINAL SCOREWANDERERS 52 HENDY 20 TRY: Christian Jones (2), Steffan Rogers (4), Karl Evans (2), Jonathan Hope, Shaun Thomas CONVERSION: Shaun Thomas
