Llanelli Wanderers v Penclawdd 22/04/06

On a perfect day for rugby, the Wanderers were undone by top of the table Penclawdd in a 54 points to 26 defeat.

Although missing a number of players, the Wanderers put up a creditable performance and both sides take credit for the expansive nature of the game they attempted to play.

Penclawdd opened the scoring with a drop goal and had soon opened up a 22 points to 0 lead. The Wanderers in reality, lucky they were not further behind as they found it very difficult to obtain possession of the ball.

However, just on half time they showed their capabilities when Daniel Rogers beat his opposite number and when confronted with a 2 on 1 situation, fed brother Steffan for him to cross. Shaun Thomas was successful with the conversion as the half closed Penclawdd 22 Wanderers 7.

The Wanderers began the second half with much more purpose and following a fine bout of handling by the three-quarters in their own half, Mark Cook was released on half way and showed good strength and speed to beat his opposite number and cross out wide. Shaun Thomas made the excellent conversion.

Penclawdd added a penalty to their score but the Wanderers were proving a far tougher proposition in this half. Iwan Jones was ruling the line-out and the forwards were putting some excellent drives together, but just couldn’t cross the whitewash.

The game then turned when Penclawdd were awarded a 10 point try (immediate penalty from half way after score) and an excellent sweeping move when they created an overlap from a poor Wanderers kick. The Wanderers, although being out scored, were putting in some excellent defensive tackles, with James Bannister and Andrew Davies to the fore.

They were rewarded for their efforts when the Rogers combination again worked for Steffan to cross for his second try and Daniel then rounded off the Wanderers scoring with a chip over the defence to gather and score.

Unfortunately, Penclawdd made a final sortie in the dying moments and managed to hit the 50 point mark as the game concluded.
