TENBY v LLANELLI WANDERERS 15/10/05The visit to the seaside coincided with a beautiful, warm sunny day on a near perfect playing surface. What breeze there was appeared to be blowing across the field and of no great advantage to either side. The early territory and possession were mainly with Tenby but it was the Wanderers who drew first blood with a penalty from Shaun Thomas. Unfortunately, after 10 minutes, the Wanderers lost outside half Richard Clement with a hamstring injury and, whilst re-adjusting their back line, conceded the opening try to the home side. However, from the kick off, Tenby conceded another penalty for a 5 -6 scoreline. The score remained the same up to half time, even though the Wanderers were beginning to put some excellent passages of play together. The start of the second half saw the Wanderers looking far more purposeful, with some good interpassing with the three-quarters. The Wanderers opened the scoring when, following a scrum on half way, Gav Mathias set Andrew Jenkins away who in turn fed full back Mike Rees, who showed exceptional speed to sprint in from 22 meters out. Shaun Thomas again converted. The big home 8 were causing the Wanderers problems with their driving play and perhaps the turning point of the game came when Daniel Rogers was able to intercept a pass and turn defense into attack, taking play from one 22 to the other. Some strange refereeing decisions left both sides bemused but the Wanderers overcame this obstacle to score perhaps the best try of the day when, from a lineout, Shaun Thomas ,at outside half, gave an inside pass to Jonathan Mayze who showed a fair turn of speed to power towards the Tenby line. He found James Bannister in support and when he was stopped Andrew Davies, as a good openside should, was on hand to score under the posts. Conversion by Shaun. A powerful break from Leighton Williams, taken on by Johnny Mayze, led to another penalty for Shaun. Tenby, to their credit, kept plugging away and were rewarded in the dying minutes for their effort with a converted try. Iwan Jones once again ruled the line-out, whilst the power of Leighton Williams was complemented by the pace and counter attacking skills of Mike Rees whilst Johnny Mayze continues to put in some telling performances despite his age !!!! Not a classic, due to constant interruptions from the referee, but nevertheless, job well done. FINAL SCORE TENBY 12 WANDERERS 23 TRY: Mike Rees, Andrew Davies, PENALTY: Shaun Thomas (3) CONVERSION: Shaun Thomas (2)
