Llantwit Fardre v Llanelli Wanderers 22/10/05

The Wanderers travelled to take on Llantwit Fardre in the Konica Cup on Saturday, and suffered a reverse by 46 points to 7.  Following a number of late withdrawals, it was a patched up squad which travelled East.

In fact, if the ever reliable Dylan Hughes and Director of rugby, Barrie Davies had not donned their kit, the scoreline could have been far more embarrassing.

Perhaps, understandably, the Wanderers performance was below par, but they did produced a spirited performance against a very powerful outfit.

Whilst a number of tackles were missed in broken play, the Wanderers showed courage in defending their try line, and whilst under the cosh for most of the game, the tackle count put in by Daniel Rogers, Gavin Mathias, James Bannister and Rhys Harries, to name but a few, was immense.

The line-outs were evenly shared, with both sides managing to take ball off each other.

The game had started brightly. Although the home side were soon on the score board the Wanderers hit back with a fine try by centre Daniel Rogers, who went outside his opposite number and  outpaced the covering defence to score out wide. Shaun Thomas put over an excellent conversion from the touchline to make it 5 points to 7.

Unfortunately, the rest of the half belonged to the home side, with backs and forwards combining in some excellent support play to produce 5 tries to end the half 29 points to 7 up.

The Wanderers almost got back into the game when full back Mike Rees took the kick off and counter attacked only for the move to be halted inches from the try line.

The only other passage of note for the visitors was when an attack broke down in the 22 , Daniel Rogers hacked forward  and when a try looked possible, the momentum was halted illegally by the home side.

Coupled with some poor finishing and some immense tackling, the home side were restricted to only 3 tries in the second period and all credit must go to the patched up Wanderers team for the spirit showed.

The Wanderers will be happy to return to league action next Saturday , knowing they are unlikely to face such a powerful and well drilled team again this term.
