Hendy v Llanelli Wanderers 29/10/05The Wanderers were relieved to get back to League action after their exploits of the previous week., although still missing a number of players from the squad. Unfortunately, the start of the game was greeted with torrential rain which persisted throughout and along with the strong wind, made conditions pretty awful. Hendy were first on the attack and, after an early drop goal attempt hit the crossbar, opened with a penalty. The Wanderers hit back with a sweeping move by the three-quarters, only for the final pass to go astray with the try line beckoning. A series of forward drives finally set up position in the home 22 and from a catch and drive at the line-out, James Bannister was on hand to power over for the opening score for the visitors. Hendy replied when their full back was allowed to run through a non existent defence from half way to score out wide. One again, the forwards took control to gain position in the Hendy 22, and following a series of penalties set up a ruck for scrum half Andrew Jenkins to power over. Mike Rees converted from the touchline to put the Wanderers 12 points to 8 in front. The Wanderers again threatened but, following an excellent break from the base of the scrum on half way by no.8 Gavin Mathias, a poor pass amongst the three-quarters prevented a certain score. The Wanderers did cross for their third try after some excellent counter attacking by Mark Cook and Mike Rees, and when Daniel Rogers put Gareth Spuffard away a try seemed certain. However, some excellent Hendy defence held him up only for the forwards to arrive and Rob Jenkins to pick up and cross. Hendy once again hit back with a penalty and with the half about to close, Rob Jenkins came through a maul to power in unapposed from 22 metres out for his second try of the game. Mike Rees converted from under the sticks to make the half time score 11-24 to the Wanderers. The conditions certainly had the better of the second half, and although both sides should be complimented for their efforts, a try apiece was the only reward. The Wanderers forward effort was impressive at times, with Gareth Rees to the fore on many of the drives. Once again Iwan Jones dominated the lineout in atrocious conditions. Not a classic due to number of errors, but with another win under their belts, job well done. FINAL SCORE HENDY 16 WANDERERS 29 TRY: James Bannister (2), Rob Jenkins (2), Andrew `Kato` Jenkins CONVERSION: Mike Rees (2) |
