Llanelli Wanderers v Newcastle Emlyn  12/11/05

The Wanderers made a welcome return to Stradey on Saturday, playing only their 3rd home game of the season. By the evidence of the opening exchanges, the Wanderers were certainly glad to be back home as they began the game at a cracking pace.

A kick out of defence by NCE was gathered by Karl Evans who rounded his man, and with Daniel Rogers in support took play deep into the NCE 22. They lay siege to the try line, but were harshly treated when both Wanderers centres were penalized with yellow cards when the opening score looked a certainty.

Playing with 13 men now allowed some respite to NCE, and the scoreline remained blank during the 10 minute period. However, once back to full strength the Wanderers opened the scoring  when a fine off load by Steffan Rogers allowed brother Daniel to coast over for a try which was converted by Shaun Thomas.

The half closed with the Wanderers leading by 7 points to 0.

The second half was a repeat of the first with Wanderers exerting pressure through their forwards and looking dangerous when spreading the ball amongst the backs.

The big NCE pack ensured that the Wanderers did not have things all their own way, but the Wanderers increased their lead with a penalty from Shaun Thomas at the start of the half and shortly afterwards produced a sweeping move from the three-quarters for full back Mike Rees to sidestep the full back and cross for the Wanderers second try.

Following a powerful surge from No. 8 Johney Mayze, taken on by Daniel Rogers, who offloaded for co-centre Leighton Williams to crash over at the posts. Mike Rees converted.  NCE were game to the end, but came up against some resolute Wanderers defence.

It had been a good team performance, especially some big hits from Karl Evans, Lee Cook and co-centres Leighton Williams and Daniel Rogers, with Steffan Rogers, who moved to scrum half in the second period, prominent in both attack and defence.

With no games for 2 weeks due to Internationals, this performance now sets up the Wanderers as they move into a difficult December , with 3 tough encounters.
