Llanelli Wanderers v Amman United 03/12/05

Due to the weeks inclement weather, the game was transferred to People`s Park to ensure it went ahead as scheduled. It proved the correct decision as the Wanderers ran in 6 tries for a 40 points to 10 victory.

The game did not start well for the home side as the Amman exerted early pressure, following some basic errors by the Wanderers. It was no real surprise, therefore, when the visitors took the lead with a converted try.

The Wanderers finally realised that they would need to start playing if they weren`t going to suffer a surprising defeat and when they did eventually get into Amman territory, Mark Cook came in off his wing to take the ball and crash over at the posts. The try was converted by Mike Rees to level the scores.

Mark Cook again showed his capabilities when he rounded his winger and took play deep into Amman territory and only last gasp defence kept him out.

What would have been one of the tries of the season when the Wanderers spun the ball along the three-quarters from their own line for Karl Evans to make ground and with Daniel Rogers in support, only for a knock on with the try line begging.

The second try for the home side came following a peel from a lineout by David Evans who fed centre Leighton Williams to crash over. Mike Rees again converted for a 14-7 lead. Amman replied with a penalty shortly afterwards and the half closed with a strong burst by Leighton Williams with Lee Cook providing good support.

Some powerful drives by the forwards set up position for man of the match Leighton Williams to crash over for his second try. Mike Rees converted to open up a 21 points to 10 lead.

The Wanderers were now getting on top due to some excellent play by the three-quarters and Leighton Williams crossed only to be held up. From the resulting 5 metre scrum, an excellent off load by outside half Steffan Rogers enabled Daniel Rogers to cross at the posts. Mike Rees converted.

A counter attack led by Karl Evans was fed out to Steffan Rogers who was able to make ground and gather his chip ahead to cross. Mike Rees converted from the touchline.

The three-quarters were now cutting their opponents at will, with the centre pairing of Daniel and Leighton showing their class. A final sweeping move by the backs saw full back Mike Rees cross for the Wanderers sixth try.

The Wanderers played out the final minutes in the Amman 22 but were unable to add to the score.

It was pleasing to see the three-quarters, from 15 to 9, stamp their class on the game, as far too often it has been the forwards controlling games. Steffan Rogers was the catalyst, and had his best game for some time.

This performance will set the side up nicely for their encounter with top of the table Penclawdd next Saturday.
